I am a little confused of documentary photo-- is it documentary versus fictional? I guess I need to think what's not to know what is documentary.

Documentary photographs can be defined very broadly as pictures of the world done in such a way that the photographer hasn't affected or altered significantly what is in front of the camera. The opposite would be something like advertising photography, where everything is constructed and arranged for the camera....

With fictional photography a blurring of the truths may exist. In this project, (Documentary) We are not crafting or making up what we photograph.

Do you know those people?

OK, I see, the photographer's intention is not altering the scene. ( though we might unintentionally leave footprints? )

Deanna,
I do know these people (or at one time did). Investing time in the subject of what you want to photograph will allow the right images to be made. Its in this space where the emotional image can take place and representation can happen.
